About
About French Bites
French Bites is a free web app for French verb conjugation practice. It focuses on five everyday tenses — not every mood in a grammar index — with the same colour in the matrix, quizzes, and scenario dialogues.
What is French Bites?
Search any verb and open a five-column conjugation grid — présent, passé composé, imparfait, futur simple, and conditionnel présent — each with example sentences and optional audio.
Example: open prendre and you see six persons × five colour-coded columns, example sentences beside each form, and a fill-in-the-blank quiz on the same verb — not a static PDF table.
These five tenses cover the vast majority of everyday French — depth beats breadth.
Who French Bites is for
- A1–B2 learners who forget conjugations mid-sentence — four vocabulary levels (Vol.1–4) ordered by frequency, not alphabet.
- Self-studiers who want depth on five core tenses before literary forms like passé simple or full subjonctif mastery.
- Travel and daily-life French — ordering coffee (Je voudrais un café), telling what happened yesterday (J'ai mangé au marché), or describing a habit (Je travaille le lundi).
Not designed for: pure literary French, C2 exam grammar breadth, or courses that require every mood in the grammar index on day one.
Features and how they work
Verb matrix — look up any verb
One sentence: Search a verb and open a five-column conjugation grid with example sentences and optional audio.
Example: Search aller → yellow présent column shows je vais, red passé composé shows je suis allé·e, tap a cell for Je vais à l'école à pied.
Quiz — spell it in context
One sentence: Pick a level and tense, then fill verb blanks inside real sentences — not isolated table cells.
Example: A1 · présent · manger → Je ____ une pomme. (answer: mange). Baguette-style sessions drill 10 verbs per round on Vol.1–4.
Scenarios — café, bakery, market dialogues
One sentence: Read short dialogues where highlighted verbs use the tenses you are practising.
Example: Scene Café au balcon — Je suis contente de te voir. Tu veux un café ? (présent in a real invitation).
Mistakes & Favorites — review what you miss
Mistakes: Verbs you get wrong in quiz enter a review pool — weighted by how often you miss them. Review sessions are Pro only; Free still records mistakes from quiz.
Favorites: Star any verb from the matrix or a quiz card; open your list and practise starred verbs across tenses (Free: first 10 list cards per session).

Who writes the guides
Learning guides on this site are written by the French Bites Team — product builders and French learners who design the app around real study pain points: too many tenses at once, grey conjugation tables, and endings that blur together. We align guide advice with what the app actually drills.
